There has been some confusion over the recent StarWitness Field Interviewer desktop application 2.5 update. This list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) attempts to address that confusion.
What product is this update for?
This update is for the StarWitness Field Interviewer desktop application for Windows 10/11.
Do I need to apply this update to my Field Interviewer family device?
No. This update is for the StarWitness Field Interviewer desktop application for Windows 10/11.
Do I need to apply this update to my StarWitness Interviewer room recording system?
No. This update is for the StarWitness Field Interviewer desktop application for Windows 10/11. A separate update is available for the Interviewer room recording system. Customers with current support and maintenance contracts for their Interview room should have received a separate email notification of that update.
What is the StarWitness Field Interviewer desktop application?
The StarWitness Field Interviewer desktop application is a trimmed down version of the StarWitness Interviewer room recording software. The application allows users to:
• Import and play recordings from the Field Interviewer HD and Field Interviewer devices
• Manage recording properties including subject, interviewer, notes, and case number
• Create bookmarks for a recording
• Export recordings to various file formats for dissemination to other parties
• Create DVDs from recordings for dissemination to other parties or storage in physical evidence lockers.
• Upload recordings directly to AXON Evidence or Microsoft OneDrive (new service integrations will be added in future updates).
Is the StarWitness Field Interviewer desktop application required to use the StarWitness Field Interviewer HD device?
No. The StarWitness Field Interviewer desktop application is NOT required to import recordings from the Field Interviewer HD device because it records standard MP4 files. Users can simply use the Windows File Explorer to copy files directly from the device. Since the files are MP4 files they can easily be shared or uploaded to digital evidence management systems (DEMS) such as AXON Evidence or to cloud file systems such as Microsoft OneDrive using the interfaces provided by those services. However, the StarWitness Field Interviewer desktop application enables uploading directly to these services reducing workflow steps.
Is the StarWitness Field Interviewer desktop application required to use the original StarWitness Field Interviewer device?
Yes. The StarWitness Field Interviewer desktop application IS required to import recordings from the original Field Interviewer device because it records to a proprietary file format. To disseminate recordings to other parties, the recordings must be imported to the StarWitness Field Interviewer desktop application and then exported to either DVD or file formats such as MP4. New Features
- Integration with AXON Evidence.com - Field Interviewer has been updated to enable users to upload recordings directly to AXON Evidence.com. See the user guide for instructions on configuring the integrations.
- Improved DVD export dialog - The improved DVD export dialog enables using external DVD drives with Interviewer and selecting the write speed.
- Improved authentication code validation dialog - The result indicator on the authentication code validation dialog now displays a green check mark if an authentication code is valid. Previous versions displayed a confusing warning indicator.
- Improved feedback when exporting recordings to DVD and removeable media - The application now provides more helpful information during export operation such invalid type of DVD inserted or removeable media that is not formatted correctly.
- Added new StarWitness branding - The user interface has been updated to reflect the new StarWitness branding including logos and color theming.
- Display time zone of a recording - The user interface has been updated to display the time zone of recordings. Note that the time and time zone are relative to computer local time.
- Support for latest Field Interviewer HD Interviewer - has been updated to support importing recordings from StarWitness Field Interviewer HD devices with the latest firmware update.
- Signed download package - The download package has been signed with an Extended Validation (EV) code signing certificate to enable installation on systems where unsigned applications are restricted by security policy.
Windows 10 Required
Microsoft ended extended support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020 and is no longer providing updates, including security updates.
Known Issues
Error while importing from Field Interviewer HD
When importing from the Field Interviewer HD you may get the error: "Attempted to access a drive that is unavailable". To work around this issue, unplug all USB storage devices (thumb drives, external hard drives or SSD drives, phones, etc) except the Field Interviewer HD and re-attempt the import.
Upgrading
Some users are reporting that the upgrade fails during the SQL Server Express portion of the installation. When it fails the installation wizard reports:
Setup Failed.
0x84bb0001 - Unspecified error.
To resolve this issue, update Microsoft Edge to the latest version and then retry the StarWitness Interviewer setup. See Microsoft knowledgebase article KB4594205 for more information.
